Ertugrul Ghazi: Just drama Or Propaganda? | Must Read

The popular Turkish drama ‘Ertugrul Ghazi’ was aired on Pakistan’s state TV during the month of Ramadan this year. But according to experts associated with the drama industry, such dramas are made with huge capital, including history, story, character and propaganda.

Pakistan Television (PTV) has not only dubbed the Turkish broadcaster TRT’s drama into Urdu, but the joint YouTube channel of the two companies has also set records of popularity.

Some actors are worried about the drama being aired on state TV. Many have called it a good step for PTV.

According to renowned Pakistani television producer Kazim Pasha, when the government and sponsors are with you, dramas like ‘Ertugrul’ can be made and become popular.

Speaking to VOA, he said that historical dramas are more expensive than ordinary dramas. For this reason, perhaps PTV is focusing more on traditional dramas these days.

According to Kazim Pasha, many historical drama serials and series have been aired on PTV at one time. In the eighties, a drama was made on Sher Shah Suri in a series called ‘History and Parable’ which cost a lot of money. It was a time when actors wore historic costumes made from Linde’s clothes, but current artists are reluctant to do so.

Why aren’t historical dramas being made in Pakistan?
Talking about the reasons for not making historical dramas in Pakistan, Kazim Pasha says, “Sponsors disappear as soon as they hear the name of historical dramas. Maybe that is why the channels have lost interest in making such dramas.”

Some similar views have been expressed by Ehteshamuddin, the director of the famous drama Adari, Aangan and Sadqa Tumhare.

Talking to VOA, he said that dramas like ‘Ertugrul’ may be successful in Pakistan, but one stops by thinking about the cost of its production.

Ehteshamuddin had directed a series called ‘Partition Stories’ which showed the time around 1947.

According to Ehteshamuddin, it is less difficult to show the time 70 years ago but it is much more difficult to show the time 500 to 700 years old. Centuries ago, there was no television and no pictures, so whatever atmosphere the director creates on the set, the actors would color it.

According to him, “It is more difficult to make a historical drama than today’s dramas and the biggest reason for this is to take people back to that era. That is why after ‘Tipu Sultan’ P. TV didn’t make a big historical drama. “

‘Forbidden love more popular in Pakistan than Ertugrul’
Kazim Pasha claimed that the popularity of the Turkish drama “Forbidden Love” in Pakistan did not go to Ertugrul.

According to him, ‘Forbidden Love’ became popular because it was in tune with the current situation in which there was romance, there was a story, people used to enjoy it, while ‘Ertugrul Ghazi’ is a historical drama because of its fame. It has been translated into 60 languages, making it the world’s number one show.

According to him, Prime Minister Imran Khan has also asked the people to watch Ertugrul Ghazi, after which a large number of people are watching this drama.

He further said that the production of Ertugrul Ghazi is excellent but the expenses incurred on it would have been very high. Due to its worldwide popularity, the drama is making its money, but we will have to wait a long time for this kind of production.

The places where the drama is shot are very beautiful. Due to lack of resources we are nowhere in the historical games, sometimes we put on funny sets and create clothes that make the audience laugh, it is a pity when compared to these dramas because We also made good plays.

According to director Ehteshamuddin, the first historical drama on Pakistani television was Saleem Ahmed’s ‘Ta’beer’ which showed the journey from the time of the last Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar to the formation of Pakistan. Famous actors did a great job in it. After which dramas like Last Rock, Shaheen and Labeek were presented by PTV.

He said that PTV lacked resources as well as technical skills to make historical dramas. Turkey has teamed up with private investors to create the ‘Ertugrul Ghazi’ series. People from all over the world came and contributed to it and it is necessary to do this to make world class plays.

He further said that such hard work is not being done anywhere in our country, neither on PTV nor on private channels. That is why historical dramas are not being made.

Ehteshamuddin has co-produced a number of plays with renowned author Mustafa Afridi, including ‘Aangan’ as well as the series ‘Stories from the Muslim World’. The center of this series was other Islamic countries besides Pakistan and the characters also belonged to these countries.

Talking about the series, Ehteshamuddin said that the series was based on the stories of authors from Islamic countries. He also told people how far literature has gone in these countries.

According to him, Iran was shown in one episode, Egypt in one story and Lebanon in another. The characters dressed up there. Fortunately, the audience did not feel that we were out of Pakistan for the shoot did not go.

‘Historical drama is very difficult to make’
Ehteshamuddin said that in the same way, in ‘Partition Stories’, the stories of past authors should be dramatized and the stories of Hindus and Muslims should be told. Where Manto’s story was in the series, it also included the stories of Kuldeep Nair and M Ashraf, even Mustafa Afridi wrote a story that people liked immensely.

Writer Mustafa Afridi told VOA that it is very difficult to make a historical drama. Because you have to create the environment according to that time first, then while writing the script you have to take care that the language is also of that time, also the character, and also the action.

According to him, along with the author, the director also has to do research in order to be closer to reality in the play.

Mustafa Afridi says that unless there is some propaganda in the story that surprises you, the drama cannot be popular. Plays that tell stories of the greatness of the past or that have a lot of hatred are also hits. On the contrary, dramas that tell the truth of the past do not work.

Talking about the popularity of Turkish drama ‘Ertugrul Ghazi’, Mustafa Afridi said that it is a 600-year-old story but not of our elders. The people who have this story had a tradition that when a king became king, all his brothers were killed in front of him. The king wept, but he commanded that they should kill him. Were our elders like that? no way.

He added that at the time of the Khilafah Movement, if our elders had known how many tons of gold were on the roofs of Ertugrul’s family palaces, they would never have given their women ornaments to digest the Khilafah.

According to Mustafa Afridi, Turkish drama and all other such dramas are in the world of dreams, because they are promoting hatred.

According to him, “historical drama does not work without hatred and if it is full of hatred, it will be a hit.”

Farah Naz Zahidi, a journalist and educator, has very different views on ‘Ertugrul Ghazi’. She has watched all the episodes of the series before it aired on state TV.

He says that more dramas like ‘Ertugrul Ghazi’ should be made so that Muslims in Pakistan can know about their history.

Speaking to VOA, he said the play depicts the Ottoman Empire’s era when its rulers cared for the minorities living in their empire.

According to him, “The style of governing shown in this play has impressed everyone. It would not be wrong to say that what we want in our society today is to win the hearts of Pakistanis by showing everything in this play.” Are for. “

While people say that ‘Ertugrul Ghazi’ will promote Islamic history, one group says that the resumption of the Crusades, which took place centuries ago, has rekindled relations between many countries and their peoples. Will spoil

At the time these wars took place, the world was divided into different parts due to distances. However, in the present era, Muslims, Hindus and Christians are all living together in the United States, Europe and the subcontinent.

Kazim Pasha says that ‘Ertugrul Ghazi’ shows the history of Turkey. That is why it has become more popular in the European region. These are areas where Muslims and Christians have fought wars.

According to him, the conflict between Christians and Muslims in the Turkish drama is part of history. The good news is that there is always more to visualizing than reading.

Kazim Pasha said that we are capable of doing the same thing and we have proved it with the best kind of translation and dubbing, but our TV does not have the technical skills to make historical serials. This is not possible without resources, channel sponsorship and sponsorship.
