Imran Khan: Cigarette Smuggling is Costing the National Exchequer Rs. 140 Billion Annually | Sayfjee

Prime Minister Imran Khan chaired a meeting of the Federal Cabinet: “Smuggled cigarettes cost Rs 20 and tax-paying companies pay Rs 90. Cigarette smuggling cannot be ignored”.

Cigarette smuggling is causing a loss of Rs 140 billion annually to the national exchequer, smuggled cigarettes cost Rs 20 and tax-paying companies pay Rs 90, the Prime Minister said, adding that the issue of cigarette smuggling could not be ignored.

A meeting of the Federal Cabinet was held under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Imran Khan in which political and economic issues including agenda items were discussed.

In the meeting, the cabinet approved three months of Afghan trade agreement, approval to increase the salaries of the employees, the provinces will approve the increase in the salaries of their employees. In the meeting, the cabinet approved the establishment of 30 more accountability courts.

The work will start in a month. The number of accountability courts is being increased on the orders of the Supreme Court.

The law ministry presented the summary at the cabinet meeting. Similarly, the federal cabinet has approved the appointment of Motahar Niaz Rana as chief secretary Balochistan and Masroor Khan as chairman OGRA.

Similarly, Pervez Khattak gave a briefing on the issue of salaries of government employees in the cabinet meeting. The meeting gave in-principle approval to increase the salaries of government employees.

The salaries of 370,000 employees of grades one to 16 will be increased. The provinces will have to look after the salaries of the provincial officials themselves. A report on cigarette smuggling from Azad Kashmir, FATA, and other areas was also presented in the cabinet meeting.

The report said that Rs 140 billion is being lost to the national exchequer every year due to smuggling. Smuggled cigarettes cost Rs 20 and tax companies pay Rs 90.

  Calling for a report from the FBR on cigarette smuggling, the Prime Minister said that the issue of cigarette smuggling could not be ignored. Didn’t the FBR get oil smuggling from Iran?

The tracking system should also be discussed with the customs officials, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Azad Kashmir government. Didn’t the FBR get involved with the sugar mafia?
