Youm-e-Ashura: Meaning, History, Importance, and Lessons in Islam

Youm-e-Ashura is one of the most significant and spiritually meaningful days in the Islamic calendar. Observed on the 10th of Muharram, it holds deep historical, religious, and moral importance for Muslims across the world.

This sacred day reminds believers of faith, patience, sacrifice, and standing for truth, values that remain relevant in every place and time.

What Is Youm-e-Ashura?

Youm-e-Ashura refers to the 10th day of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic (Hijri) calendar. The word Ashura comes from the Arabic word “Ashara”, meaning ten.

Muslims observe this day to:

  • Remember key historical events.
  • Engage in fasting and worship.
  • Reflect on justice, patience, and moral courage.

Historical Significance of Youm-e-Ashura

1. Victory of Prophet Musa (AS)

According to authentic Islamic traditions:

  • Allah saved Prophet Musa (Moses) and the Children of Israel.
  • Pharaoh and his army were drowned on this day.

When Prophet Muhammad (S.A.Q) migrated to Madinah, he found Jews fasting on Ashura. He said:

What is the (significance) of this day that you observe fast on it? They said: It is the day of great (significance) when Allah delivered Moses and his people, and drowned the Pharaoh and his people, and Moses observed fast out of gratitude and we also observe it. Upon this the Messenger of Allah (S.A.W) said: We have more right, and we have a closer connection with Moses than you have; so Allah’s Messenger (S.A.W) observed fast (on the day of Ashura), and gave orders that it should be observed.

[Sahih Muslim 1130c]

2. Martyrdom of Imam Hussain (R.A)

For Muslims, especially in the Indian subcontinent, Middle East, and South Asia, Youm-e-Ashura is deeply associated with:

  • The martyrdom of Imam Hussain (R.A), grandson of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W).
  • The tragic event of Karbala (680 CE, present-day Iraq).

Imam Hussain (R.A) stood firmly against oppression and injustice, sacrificing his life for truth and righteousness.
